Caring For Your Sunglasses
By Viktoria A (Guest) - December 9, 2011Sunglasses can be very fragile. They can get scratched, bent, lose a screw, and sometimes, all three. Replacing a pair can be costly. Here are some quick tips that will make caring for your sunglasses virtually painless:
Use a Case
Chances are, you just throw your sunglasses into your purse or on the dash of your car without a second thought. And when it's the off-season, they become entangled in your kitchen's junk drawer. If your goal is to destroy them, then job well done. If not, you need to ensure that you utilize a case or pouch that protects them from the elements, scratches, and becoming bent. A pouch provides a good amount of protection and is convenient and lightweight. If possible, however, the option of choice is a hard-backed case, which provides the greatest protection. For long-term storage, you may want to consider a microfiber bag or hard case.
Keep Them Clean
Use a sunglasses cleaning solution to remove dust particles and other such items. If this is not available, a mild detergent will work fine. Wash and rinse them with warm water and do not use any kind of paper to clean them. You should also invest in a lens cleaning cloth, which are inexpensive and easy to use.
Special Care for Polarized Lenses

Polarized lenses require additional care. For these, it is highly recommended that you utilize an optical spray, like those used for camera lenses. Also, be sure not to leave them out in the sun or around any source of heat for an extended amount of time. The stress from such heat can alter the polarization of light passing through the lenses.
Have a Tool Set Handy
Despite your best efforts, your sunglasses may become physically damaged and if you're anything like the average Joe, this will happen when you need them most. A sunglasses repair set consists of a mini-screwdriver and may even contain extra screws, in case you lose one. You can even get a repair kit keychain, if you fancy such a thing.
Caring for your sunglasses is not a difficult task to accomplish, but many people disregard it as too time-consuming or annoying. But with the proper care and maintenance, there's no reason you can't keep your sunglasses looking great and functioning perfectly way past the point when your particular pair goes out of style.
